WHITE HEAT 1 & 2
The first stage in the mating game - a play fight. In the second stage the stallion has brought the filly under his power. She submits and is ready to mate. In these two paintings I wanted to paint white on white - close pale shades, light and shadow.
DARK ENERGY
In this painting I wanted to experiment with the opposite pole of colour - dark on dark - a black horse (again a Friesian!) galloping through a dark landscape against a sunset or a breaking dawn.
The interest of these white on white and black on black paintings was to experiment with close tones of colour, stopping short of total obliteration into the white or the black.
POWER
Through the sun and the wind a black Friesian stallion trots by the sea. His power, contained and compressed, echoes the power and curve of the breaking waves, his blue-black feet lift over and through the spume covered sand.
Drawings
DRAWINGS OF HORSES (2016)
I made these four drawings during the last days of 2015. I have already done several oil paintings of horses - large explosive paintings, which I will shortly be uploading onto my website. The drawings, although concentrated with energy and vigour, are on a smaller scale in tones of black, white and grey. There is an immediacyand intimacy here, and I so enjoyed making them in the privacy and warmth of my bedroom at this dark and - for this year - difficult year ending after the death of my husband in the summer.
